Stigma, language and advocacy
Some of the hardest parts of raising an autistic child have nothing to do with autism. They come from what other people believe about it.
Where stigma actually lands
In public
Stares and comments during a meltdown, and the assumption that a distressed child is a spoiled one and you are a bad parent. Nothing prepares you for it. Most parents settle on a short line — "he's autistic and overwhelmed, we're fine" — and stop explaining further.
In the family
Relatives who think it's a phase, who suggest discipline, or who quietly stop inviting you. This is often the most painful source, because it's the one you expected support from.
In your community
In many communities disability carries shame that attaches to the whole family, and a diagnosis can be something people hide. Families navigating this often find that a trusted elder, faith leader or community group who understands autism changes the conversation faster than any leaflet.
At school
Autistic students are bullied at far higher rates, and are also disciplined more often for behaviour that is a disability response. Exclusion from the informal parts of school life — birthday parties, group work, recess — does lasting damage.
In healthcare
Diagnostic overshadowing: real medical problems attributed to autism and left untreated. Pain communicated as behaviour and read as "behaviour."
In adulthood
Unemployment and underemployment rates for autistic adults are very high, including for graduates. The barrier is usually the interview and the social layer of a workplace, not the work.
Inside the family's own head
Grief, guilt and comparison. Common, human, and worth talking about with someone rather than carrying silently.
Language: what to say
You'll be told different things by different people, and both are said in good faith.
| Preferred by many | Also used | Best avoided |
|---|---|---|
| "Autistic person" — identity-first, preferred by most autistic adults surveyed, who see autism as inseparable from who they are | "Person with autism" — person-first, taught in many clinical and educational settings and preferred by some families | "Suffers from," "afflicted by," "a victim of" |
| "Non-speaking" | "Minimally speaking" | "Non-verbal" when the person can read, type or sign |
| "Needs a lot of support" / "needs little support" | "Level 1 / 2 / 3" | "High functioning," "low functioning," "mild," "severe" |
| "Neurotypical" | "Non-autistic" | "Normal" |
Simplest rule: ask the autistic person. If they can't tell you yet, use identity-first language and change it when they do. These preferences come from English-speaking discussion and don't map neatly onto every language — in your own language, the respectful phrasing may be different, and the autistic adults who speak it are the people to ask.
Masking, and why it matters
Masking is suppressing autistic traits to fit in — forcing eye contact, holding in stimming, rehearsing conversation, copying other people's personalities. It is exhausting, and it is associated with anxiety, depression, burnout, loss of identity and higher suicidality. It's also often what makes a child look "fine" at school and fall apart at home.
This matters when choosing support. A programme that makes a child look less autistic may be teaching them to mask harder. The better goal is a child who can communicate, stay safe, ask for what they need, and be themselves in most of their life.
Advocating without burning out
- Put it in writing. Email after every phone call summarising what was agreed. It creates a record and changes behaviour.
- Write in your own language if that's easier. A request in Spanish, Vietnamese or Arabic is legally just as valid, and the district is responsible for translating it.
- Learn the three or four rights that matter most in your situation rather than all of special education law.
- Use your Parent Training and Information Center. Every state has one, funded federally, free, and they know your district. Many have bilingual staff.
- Bring someone. A second adult at an IEP meeting changes the room.
- Ask for the denial in writing with the reason. Many refusals evaporate at this point, and the rest become appealable.
- Be relentlessly polite and completely immovable. It works better than either half alone.
- Pick your battles by year, not by week. Decide the two things that matter most this school year and let smaller ones go.
Estigma, lenguaje y defensa
| «Necesita mucho apoyo» / «necesita poco apoyo» | «Nivel 1 / 2 / 3» | «Alto funcionamiento», «bajo funcionamiento», «leve», «grave» |
| «Neurotípico» | «No autista» | «Normal» |
- आफ्नो Parent Training and Information Center प्रयोग गर्नुहोस्।
