What this site is

A free, plain-language guide for parents and guardians of autistic children in the United States. It covers what autism is, what the research does and does not show, what helps day to day, and how to reach the services your state is obliged to provide.

It is written for the moment when someone first says the word "autism" about your child and you do not know what to do on Monday morning.

What this site is not

• Not medical advice. Nothing here diagnoses, treats or replaces a conversation with your child's doctor.
• Not legal advice. Special education and disability law is federal, state and local all at once. For a dispute, contact your state's Parent Training and Information Center or Protection & Advocacy agency.
• Not a directory of providers. We do not recommend individual clinics, therapists or ABA agencies, and we do not accept payment for placement.
• Not a cure site. We do not host or link to recovery claims, and we say plainly which popular treatments are unproven or dangerous.

How the content is written

1. Sourced from primary material

   Federal law, CDC surveillance data, published systematic reviews and state agency documentation, rather than secondary summaries.

2. Balanced where the field is divided

   On contested subjects — ABA most of all — we present the clinical case and the autistic community's objections side by side, and let you decide with your own child in front of you.

3. Reviewed by autistic adults

   Autistic adults were autistic children, and their read on what helps and what harms is treated as evidence, not decoration.

4. Dated

   Every page carries a last-reviewed date. Health information without a date should be discounted, including ours.

5. Corrected in public

   If something here is wrong, tell us and we will fix it and say what changed.

Who runs it and how it is funded

This site is run and funded by the parents of an autistic child. It is provided completely free of cost to everyone who is looking for information about autism, and it always will be.

We built it because we needed it ourselves and could not find it. Everything here is what we wish someone had handed us on the first day.

Languages

The interface, the crisis information and the full state-by-state checklists are available in English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Tagalog, Haitian Creole, Russian and Arabic. Longer articles are currently translated into Spanish only; other languages fall back to English with a notice.

Translations need native-speaker review before this site is relied on. If you can help with a language, please get in touch.

Accessibility

This site aims to meet WCAG 2.1 AA. It works with keyboard navigation and screen readers, respects reduced-motion settings, supports light and dark themes, and has a larger-text control in the header. There is no auto-playing media and no timed content.

If any part of it is difficult to use with your assistive technology, that is a defect we want to hear about. Tell us on the contact page and we will treat it as a priority fix.

Qué es este sitio

Una guía gratuita y en lenguaje claro para padres y tutores de niños autistas en Estados Unidos. Cubre qué es el autismo, qué muestra y qué no muestra la investigación, qué ayuda en el día a día, y cómo llegar a los servicios que su estado está obligado a prestar.

Está escrita para ese momento en que alguien pronuncia por primera vez la palabra «autismo» sobre su hijo y usted no sabe qué hacer el lunes por la mañana.

Qué no es este sitio

• No es consejo médico. Nada de aquí diagnostica, trata ni sustituye una conversación con el médico de su hijo.
• No es asesoría legal. La educación especial y el derecho a la discapacidad son federales, estatales y locales a la vez. Para un conflicto, acuda al Centro de Formación e Información para Padres o a la agencia de Protección y Defensa de su estado.
• No es un directorio de proveedores. No recomendamos clínicas, terapeutas ni agencias concretas, y no aceptamos pagos por aparecer aquí.
• No es un sitio de curas. No alojamos ni enlazamos promesas de recuperación, y decimos claramente qué tratamientos populares no están probados o son peligrosos.

Cómo se escribe el contenido

1. A partir de fuentes primarias

   Ley federal, datos de vigilancia de los CDC, revisiones sistemáticas publicadas y documentación de las agencias estatales, y no resúmenes de segunda mano.

2. Equilibrado donde el campo está dividido

   En los temas discutidos —el ABA sobre todo— presentamos el argumento clínico y las objeciones de la comunidad autista uno al lado del otro, y usted decide con su propio hijo delante.

3. Revisado por adultos autistas

   Los adultos autistas fueron niños autistas, y su lectura de qué ayuda y qué hace daño se trata como evidencia, no como adorno.

4. Con fecha

   Cada página lleva la fecha de última revisión. La información de salud sin fecha merece desconfianza, también la nuestra.

5. Corregido en público

   Si algo de aquí está mal, díganoslo y lo arreglamos diciendo qué cambió.

Quién lo lleva y cómo se financia

Este sitio lo llevan y lo financian los padres de un niño autista. Se ofrece completamente gratis a todo el que busque información sobre el autismo, y así seguirá siendo.

Lo construimos porque lo necesitábamos nosotros mismos y no lo encontrábamos. Todo lo que hay aquí es lo que nos habría gustado que alguien nos diera el primer día.

Idiomas

La interfaz, la información de emergencia y las guías completas estado por estado están disponibles en catorce idiomas. Los artículos largos están traducidos por ahora al español y al nepalí; los demás idiomas muestran el inglés con un aviso.

Las traducciones necesitan revisión de hablantes nativos antes de que se pueda confiar del todo en este sitio. Si puede ayudar con algún idioma, escríbanos.

Accesibilidad

Este sitio busca cumplir la WCAG 2.1 AA. Funciona con navegación por teclado y lectores de pantalla, respeta los ajustes de movimiento reducido, admite tema claro y oscuro, y tiene un control de texto más grande en la cabecera. No hay medios que se reproduzcan solos ni contenidos con temporizador.
