Everyday activities and what to focus on
The best activities for an autistic child are usually the ones they already love, done more deliberately. Skill-building doesn't need to look like therapy.
Build around the deep interest, not against it
An intense interest is a strength: motivation you don't have to manufacture, a route into conversation, an early form of expertise, and often a regulator when things get overwhelming. Reading, counting, vocabulary, turn-taking and friendship can all be taught through trains, elevators, Minecraft or horses. Using the interest as a reward you withhold tends to backfire; using it as the material tends to work.
Water
Swimming is regulating, physically demanding and a genuine safety skill given elopement risk. Make lessons a priority, not a luxury.
Music
Rhythm supports communication, timing and joint attention — and gives a shared activity that needs no conversation.
Animals
Predictable, non-judgmental company. Care routines build responsibility without social pressure.
Building and making
Lego, models, cooking, circuits. Clear rules, visible results, hands busy.
Movement
Climbing, trampolines, swinging, martial arts, running. Heavy-work and vestibular input often settles a dysregulated nervous system.
Nature
Lower sensory load than most indoor spaces, and space to move and make noise without being corrected.
Gaming and online groups
For many autistic kids these are real friendships with the sensory and timing pressure removed. Supervise; don't dismiss.
Structured clubs
Chess, robotics, drama, scouts. A shared task makes socialising far easier than open free time.
Life skills, early
Money, cooking, laundry, transport, self-care. Start years before it feels necessary and break each into small steps.
Getting through the hard parts
Meltdowns
A meltdown is a nervous system overload, not a tantrum, and not something a child can stop by choosing to. During one, reduce input: fewer words, lower light and noise, more space, and safety first. Afterwards, both of you need recovery time before any conversation. Later, look for the pattern — the trigger is often something that happened hours earlier, and the meltdown is the accumulation. A shutdown, where a child goes quiet and still, is the same overload pointing inward and is just as significant.
Transitions
Warnings, visual schedules and timers help. So does making the next thing concrete — show it, don't just announce it. Build in transition time rather than treating it as delay, and keep the ending of a beloved activity predictable: same words, same warning, every time.
Sleep
Very common and worth taking seriously, because tired children and tired parents cope with less. A rigid routine, a dark cool room, weighted or compression bedding if it helps, and screens off well before bed. Melatonin is frequently used and often discussed with paediatricians — worth asking about rather than starting alone. Rule out pain, reflux and sleep apnea.
Eating
Selective eating is usually sensory, not defiance — texture, smell, temperature and appearance. Pressure and bargaining tend to shrink the list of safe foods. Keep safe foods reliably available, introduce new foods alongside them with no requirement to eat, and get a feeding therapist and a paediatrician involved if the range is very narrow or weight is affected.
Safety and wandering
A large share of autistic children wander, and water is the greatest danger. Swimming lessons, door alarms and locks, an ID bracelet or shoe tag, a current photo on your phone, and a note to close neighbours. Ask your police department about voluntary registries and tracking-device programmes. Tell first responders about water first.
Siblings
Siblings notice the difference in attention long before they say anything. Regular one-to-one time, honest age-appropriate explanations, permission to be frustrated, and sibling support groups where they exist. They should not be a substitute carer.
Holidays, travel and family events
Preview with photos and a plan. Book sensory-friendly hours where venues offer them. Airports, many museums and some theme parks run disability access programmes worth arranging in advance. Give your child a guaranteed exit and a quiet place, and let them use it early rather than as a last resort.
A calm-down kit that travels
Assembled with your child, not for them, and kept in the car or a backpack.
Construir y fabricar
Lego, maquetas, cocina, circuitos. Reglas claras, resultados visibles, manos ocupadas.
Movimiento
Trepar, camas elásticas, columpios, artes marciales, correr.
Dinero, cocina, lavadora, transporte, autocuidado.
Fiestas, viajes y eventos familiares
